Although we haven't post a lot of news about 2018 GreenLight WorldFlight Black Carbon research mission we are working hard for more than 5 months now. Asia is big, divers with a lot of political problems. High mountains, cold seas, high winds, bad visibility, snow, rain, low clouds are problems whith which we have to deal every day.
We are prepared. Extremely snowy and cold winter prevents us to fly, so we have time to work on papers. Overflight and landing permissions are necessary in every country we fly over. China authorization is crucial for us as China low altitude airspace is more or less closed for single engine aircraft. They require diplomatic clearance through diplomatic channels. Ministry of Foreign affairs is working hard for several months now and there is a small light on the end of the bureaucratic tunnel. Good thing is that Earthrounders (association of pilots who flew Around the World in airplanes up to 7000 kg maximum take off weight) meeting is held in Zhengzhou, small town with 8 millions souls in Henan province starting April 24th. Earthrounders will participate on big Zhengzhou Air Show which will open the doors at the same time. Another good thing is that organizer of the Air Show officialy invited me to join this big aviation event. They are also working on China permission for us.
The routing of GLWF Asia 2018 is changing all the time. I have planned, preplanned, replanned the whole continent with any possible option just to be prepared when China green light turns on.
Another story is Russia. Although they are a bit more flexible in comparison to my 2002 and 2004 flights, it is still a lot of work to do. Russians now allowed foreign IFR flights and landings on big international airports, where there is no fuel for small single engine aircraft. VFR flights and landings at local small airfields are restricted due only russian speaking controlers. AOPA Russia with Evgeny Kabanov, Dmitry Prusakov and Andrey Ivanov offered support with permissions, flight planning and fuel arranging. At the moment it looks that I will enter China on the south from Vietnam, cross the whole country to the north over Mongolia to Ulan-Ude in Russia where my very good old friend Andrey Dubrovin will join me.
More details about actual flying routes will shortly come.
