The flight over India has shown again that the ground sources exert influence high in the atmosphere.
The measured aerosol absorption at 3 km altitude is similar to the one measured in a central-European town like Ljubljana in winter. The top boundary of the polluted layer was about 3.5 km above the surface. Aerosols advected this high can be transported over large distances because of their several-weeks long lifetime. They can influence the monsoon and be deposited in the Himalayas on snow and ice. There, they exert additional heating by darkening the surface.
